Construir se convierte en un acto pedagógico: la obra se organiza por fases junto a la comunidad, que aporta mano de obra y conocimiento. La tierra de los muros se extrae del propio solar y se comprime in situ en bloques; el agua de lluvia se recoge de la cubierta para los meses secos.

Building becomes a teaching act: the work is staged together with the community, which provides labour and knowledge. The earth of the walls comes from the plot itself and is compressed on site into blocks; rainwater is harvested from the roof for the dry months.

Mahandougou tiene una fortaleza que ningún presupuesto compra: gente que sabe construir con lo que tiene. Su dificultad es la contraria —no hay acero, ni cemento barato, ni maquinaria, y la temporada de lluvias parte el año en dos—. El proyecto se organiza alrededor de esas dos realidades: sólo materiales que están a menos de un día de camino, sólo técnicas que ya se practican en el poblado, y un calendario de obra que cabe entre lluvia y lluvia.

Mahandougou has a strength no budget can buy: people who know how to build with what they have. Its difficulty is the opposite —no steel, no cheap cement, no machinery, and a rainy season that splits the year in two—. The project is organised around those two facts: only materials less than a day away, only techniques already practised in the village, and a construction calendar that fits between the rains.

Terminada, la escuela no parece un objeto traído de fuera. Los aleros dan sombra a las galerías, la tierra devuelve el color del suelo del que salió y todo el conjunto se lee a la altura de los niños y de la comunidad que lo levantó y lo cuida.

Finished, the school does not look like an object brought from elsewhere. The eaves shade the galleries, the earth gives back the colour of the ground it came from, and the whole reads at the scale of the children and the community that raised it and looks after it.

El edificio existe para acoger a quien llega en el peor momento. Por eso el recorrido está pensado como una secuencia: se entra por debajo de la estructura, en sombra; el primer módulo atiende y clasifica; los siguientes ofrecen consulta, un lugar donde reponerse y un espacio de gestión desde el que coordinar la respuesta. La logística —incluido el suministro de medicación por dron— se resuelve en el extremo opuesto para no cruzarse con las personas.

The building exists to take in those who arrive at their worst moment. The route is therefore conceived as a sequence: you enter from beneath the structure, in shade; the first module receives and triages; the next ones offer consultation, a place to recover and a management space from which to coordinate the response. Logistics —including drone-delivered medication— is resolved at the far end so it never crosses paths with people.

Dentro, el mismo espacio sirve para trabajar y para descansar. La planta libre y las celosías dejan que cada uso encuentre su sitio sin levantar tabiques: hoy una mesa de coordinación, mañana una hilera de camas.

Inside, the same space serves for working and for resting. The free plan and the screens let each use find its place without raising partitions: today a coordination table, tomorrow a row of beds.

El sistema crece por agregación: módulos familiares que se enganchan formando racimos, y racimos que forman barrio, dejando entre ellos patios y espacios para educación, salud y reunión. El campo deja de ser una solución provisional para convertirse en el germen de un asentamiento.

The system grows by aggregation: family modules clip together into clusters, and clusters into a neighbourhood, leaving courtyards and spaces for education, health and gathering between them. The camp stops being a provisional fix and becomes the seed of a settlement.

La célula hexagonal toma su forma de las 'casas colmena' tradicionales: un anillo superior tensa la cubierta de tela y abre un óculo cenital que extrae el aire caliente. Geometría y ventilación trabajan juntas para mantener fresco el interior sin energía.

The hexagonal cell takes its form from the traditional 'beehive houses': an upper ring tensions the fabric roof and opens a top oculus that draws hot air out. Geometry and ventilation work together to keep the interior cool with no energy.

The fabrics that enclose and roof the modules are made by Syrian refugee women in Reyhanli: the shelter thus builds in a social economy that gives work and roots. Bamboo, fabric and simple anchors mean the inhabitants themselves raise and maintain their homes.

El proyecto es el ejercicio de último curso de la carrera. El enunciado era común para todo el taller —proyectar una torre en Barbate, sobre el frente de acantilados que mira al Atlántico— y cada alumno elegía a quién iba destinada. Aquí la torre se convirtió en un centro de investigadores eólicos: quienes la habitan estudian, precisamente, el fenómeno que les da cobijo y energía.

The project is the final-year exercise of the degree. The brief was shared by the whole studio —to design a tower in Barbate, on the cliff front facing the Atlantic— and each student chose who it was for. Here the tower became a centre for wind researchers: those who inhabit it study, precisely, the phenomenon that shelters and powers them.

The building works as an instrument: the openings capture the air, the turbine redirects it through the interior void and the roof generator turns it into energy. Researching the wind and inhabiting it are, here, the same act.

La fachada es una doble piel de vidrio facetado: protege del temporal, deja pasar la luz rasante del oeste y mantiene entre sus dos hojas una cámara por la que el aire circula. Es lo que permite que la torre esté abierta al viento sin estar expuesta a él.

The façade is a faceted double glass skin: it shields from the storm, lets the low western light through and keeps an air cavity between its two leaves. That is what lets the tower be open to the wind without being exposed to it.

Antequera tiene veranos largos y muy secos, y ese dato manda sobre todo lo demás. La casa se plantea desde el principio como un edificio de balance energético casi nulo: los grandes huecos se concentran donde interesa captar en invierno, los aleros y las lamas de la cubierta calculan la sombra de los meses de calor, y la envolvente se cierra donde el sol pega sin dar nada a cambio.

Antequera has long, very dry summers, and that fact rules everything else. The house is conceived from the outset as a near-zero energy building: the large openings are concentrated where winter gain is useful, the eaves and roof louvers work out the shade for the hot months, and the envelope closes up wherever the sun beats down without giving anything back.

Inside, the choice of material is also a health decision. The timber of the pitched roofs is left exposed and sets the character of each room; the rest of the palette —pale render, oak and dark joinery— is chosen among low-carbon materials, free of volatile compounds and with natural finishes.

Y son materiales psicológicamente activos: la madera vista, la luz que cambia a lo largo del día y la vista del valle desde cada hueco hacen que la casa se perciba distinta a cada hora. Ese es, al final, el confort que se busca.

And they are psychologically active materials: exposed timber, light shifting through the day and the view of the valley from every opening make the house feel different at every hour. That, in the end, is the comfort being sought.
